The fountain, carved from a single piece of stone, was built by Ayoubi Sultan Al-Adel Abu Bakr bin Ayoub in 1193 and features sacred washing stations for cleansing prior to prayer. The Mosque of Omar (Dome of the Rock) was a favorite subject for 19th and early 20th century photographers, who focused much more on it than on the Al-Aqsa Mosque. About Lehnert & Landrock: Founded in 1904, Lehnert & Landrock was a photographic studio run by Rudolf Franz Lehnert and Ernst Heinrich Landrock, active in Tunisia and Egypt in the early 20th century. They traveled to Tunisia in 1904 and opened a photography shop in Tunis. At the beginning of WWI, the shop was closed when martial law was declared in French colonies. Lehnert was arrested and sent to an internment camp in Corsica, while Landrock was held in Switzerland. After the war, they set up a business in Leipzig before Lehnert traveled again – to Egypt, Palestine, and Lebanon. Important Note: It is believed the glass printing plates for this image were destroyed during the American and British bombardment of Germany in World War II – making this print even rarer.
